Welcome to Newcastle Orienteering Club

Orienteering is a competitive or non-competitive recreational activity in which participants use a detailed map, and usually a compass, to navigate between checkpoints on an unfamiliar course in bush terrain, parkland or urban areas.

If you like a physical and mental challenge while exploring the outdoors, orienteering is the sport for you!

When:Wednesday 8th February
Time: Starts between 5 and 6:30pm
Type: 45 minute score course
Course Setter: Samantha Howe
Directions: Field adjacent Glasgow St

Thanks to all the participants who came and enjoyed the lovely day last wednesday.
I wanted to set a course with some challenges that would make people think more about route choice and time management and there were quite a few people coming back in a little (or a lot) late. Many runners chose to brave the large hill/ridgeline through the middle of the map to score some bigger points and it was interesting to see the various routes taken.
I really tried to keep the clues simple and easy to read while still being interesting and varied so thanks for the great feedback. There was a last minute reprint of the clue sheets when a clue changed (after vetting) because the Pre-School bought new coloured flags but that was the only drama on the day. Also the man who put the notice up asking participants to look for his dog (which had escaped from his yard) found his dog safe a short way down the road.
Thanks to Mick, Viola, Geoff and Cheryle for help setting up, Cheryle and Joy at the start desk, Viola, Denis and Kendall at the finish and everyone who helped pack up.

I'm very much looking forward to setting another course in the next summer series.
