Welcome to Newcastle Orienteering Club

Orienteering is a competitive or non-competitive recreational activity in which participants use a detailed map (and usually a compass) to navigate between checkpoints (known as “controls”) along an unfamiliar course. If you like a mental and physical challenge and exploring the outdoors, orienteering is the sport for you!

Quick Start Instructions For Using MapRunF

Before The Event

  • Download (from Apple App Store or Google Play) the (free) MapRunF app and install it on your smartphone
  • Open the app and fill in the required personal details
  • Optional: Download MapRunG and install it on your Garmin watch if you prefer to run using your watch instead of your phone (you will still need MapRunF on your phone)
  • Download the control descriptions from the Newcastle Orienteering club website and print them out if you like to have them in your wrist control descriptions holder (they will also be printed on the reverse side of the map)

At The Event

  • Go to the event (Start times are from 5pm - 6:30pm but you will need to be there some time before your start for preparation)
  • Open MapRunF. Select the relevant event via the “Events Near Me” button and download the map (if you haven't already) then move to the Pre-Start Area (possibly line up)
  • At the next beep, move into the Pre-Start Area 1 (up to 3 people can enter at one time) where you will have 2 minutes
  • Here you will get your MapRun PIN. Press the “Go To Start” button (or "Send Event to my Watch"). Key in the PIN and make sure MapRun is working. If you are using your watch, you will be able to safely leave your phone here to pick up later at the finish.
  • At the next beep, move into Pre-Start Area 2. Pick up your map and you have 2 minutes to plan your course (you may want to bring a highlighter if you like to mark where you want to run)
  • On the next beep, run through the start triangle. Your phone/watch should beep to indicate that your time has started. You have 45 minutes. If you are later than 45 minutes then you will start losing points.
  • Run/walk your route. As you pass within 10m of each control your phone/watch should beep. Timing will stop automatically as you pass back through the start/finish location (Your device will beep)
  • Once you have finished, your result should automatically upload to the web. If it hasn’t, use the option to upload your run manually.
  • If you think one of the controls that you passed did not beep then select the HITMO button and we will check your route and amend your score.
