Welcome to Newcastle Orienteering Club

Orienteering is a competitive or non-competitive recreational activity in which participants use a detailed map, and usually a compass, to navigate between checkpoints on an unfamiliar course in bush terrain, parkland or urban areas.

If you like a physical and mental challenge while exploring the outdoors, orienteering is the sport for you!

NOTES

Special map symbols

 Special map symbols

Wood chipped and bare areas under trees are mapped as rough open (lighter yellow). Planted areas under trees are mapped as out of bounds (olive green). Areas around larger fig trees with extensive root buttresses are mapped as slow run (light green). Special surfaces (eg. rubberised areas in the playground) are mapped with the ISOM School Maps symbol for “Paved area/Tartan surfaces” (darker brown).

Note the Out of Bounds/Forbidden to Cross symbols. Do not cross the garden beds (regardless of whether they have plants or not) or the planted areas under trees. There are red & white streamers in some places to remind you not to cross.

Mass start event: There is a pivot control that you will visit multiple times. There is a map flip at the pivot control part way through the course. IOF specifications regarding minimum distances between controls have not been adhered to and there are lots of close controls in some areas (including some controls not on the course). There are multiple crossings of the lines between controls on the map. Make sure you are heading to the correct control.

Control Descriptions are on the map (no loose descriptions).

Safety: Keep to the left when rounding blind corners (tight turning left, wide turning right). Take care around the pivot control which may be busy. Be aware of other park users.

Map: “Kitchley Green”. Scale 1: 10 000. 5 metre contour interval.

Course planner: Denis Lyons. Vetter: Jim Lee.

Directions: From East/Northeast/South - travel to Leggetts Dr near Mulbring and turn west into Lake Rd at the roundabout. After 7.3km turn left into Kearsley Rd and travel 2km to Abernethy. Turn right into Murray St (which becomes Abernethy St) and travel 2.8km to Kitchener. Turn right (north) at the junction onto Cessnock St and travel 850m. From Cessnock - head south on Vincent St (the main street) which becomes Quorrobolong Rd and travel approximately 3km to Kitchener.

NOY8_2023_parking.JPG

Assembly/Start: The assembly area is at the northwestern edge of the residential section of Kitchener, approximately 250m north of the Khartoum Hotel. The start will be approximately 260m east of the registration. Follow a streamer trail. The Start Triangle will be at a bend in the Kitchener East Trail. This trail, which runs diagonally across the map, will be referenced in the safety bearing instructions.

Terrain: The area is part of Werakata National Park between Kitchener and Kearsley. There are large sections of thick Tea Tree which have not been mapped in any real detail, plus many other forms of light and dark green. There is good detail in the gullies and watercourses which run off the steeper section of the map

Courses: NOTE - Entry will be by Hunter Valley Championships class not by course. The course will be determined by which class you enter. Click here for separate info on the Hunter Valley Championships classes.

Notes/Hazards:

- There are subsidence cracks in some parts of the area. Known cracks are shown with the non-standard map symbol of lines of purple dots. Scan the ground in front of you to avoid this hazard.

- There are short sections of metal star pickets in the ground that mostly correspond with the narrow yellow marked survey lines on the map. Although the survey lines are overgrown, they’re retained on the map to show where you may find these metal posts. We’ve done our best to indicate these posts in the field with pink surveyor’s tape, but can’t guarantee we found them all.

- Move off tracks if you encounter trail bikes.

No water will be provided at the assembly area or on the courses. Please bring/carry your own.

Help with collecting controls following the event closure will be needed and very much appreciated.
