Welcome to Newcastle Orienteering Club

Orienteering is a competitive or non-competitive recreational activity in which participants use a detailed map, and usually a compass, to navigate between checkpoints on an unfamiliar course in bush terrain, parkland or urban areas.

If you like a physical and mental challenge while exploring the outdoors, orienteering is the sport for you!

Comments from the setter:

One of the really humbling things about setting/organising an event is the experience of the many, many people who help out when they see you aren't coping. So, a BIG THANK YOU to all those who helped out at the start and finish. I was warned that one table at the finish wasn't enough so we made sure we had two, I now think we probably need three tables so we aren't working with clues sheets stacked on top of clue sheets.

Some of you know about my left-right motor co-ordination issues. This also applies to east-west, but not to north south. So apologies for the two questions suggesting West which should have read east - the creek bank at 1U and the monument at 2G.

The house number you should have been looking for at 1M was #56 (not #5). At least it obviously wasn't #5! At 1N the number of boats was 2 last week, but one has gone (probably along with its visiting owners!), and as I left off the house number (#71) many assumed the house on the corner which had no boats. For both these clues we basically accepted any answer! At 1V it might have helped if I'd been explicit with the company name, but the placement of the circle really meant there could not be any other answer.

In setting the event I thought the group down the south end of the map were meant mainly to make this the first event where no-one got the lot in 45 minutes, and 3E in the far east (yes, I mean east this time!) was also a bit nasty. The new sub-division was jut being started when I surveyed the event, so I made that path out of bounds. We need to respect property owners so we don't get them off-side and get complaints to Council or the Police, etc. I was told about someone going through this area which was expressly mentioned in the notice on the display board.

Thank you everyone for being understanding about the few odd clues. Otherwise I hope everyone did their best and enjoyed themselves anyway.

A hint for competitors (and setters) the little dot at the centre of the circle is usually placed with a lot of thought to show which side of a street corner/bend/building/track to look for the answer to a question. This applies particularly to properties on a street corner.
