Welcome to Newcastle Orienteering Club

Orienteering is a competitive or non-competitive recreational activity in which participants use a detailed map (and usually a compass) to navigate between checkpoints (known as “controls”) along an unfamiliar course. If you like a mental and physical challenge and exploring the outdoors, orienteering is the sport for you!

URBAN FINAL MARCH 30, 2022

Location: Richley Reserve, New Lambton.

Directions: Assembly is adjacent to the intersection of Mahogany Drive and
Queens Road, New Lambton.

Parking: Park on the west/north, respectively, of these roads so we don’t
interfere with resident parking.

Map: Richley Reserve, 1:4000 scale with 2 metre contours.
New map with fieldwork and cartography by Ian Dempsey and basemap by
Hamish Mackie.

Planner: Ian Dempsey

Vetter: Andrew Power

Terrain: Open parkland with complex areas of vegetation and man-made
detail, along with forested parts of the Reserve. There are small sections of
subsidence and excavation associated with past mining activity. Both Long
and Short courses include several short legs through slow run vegetation
between tracks; leg cover may be an option for you.

IMPORTANT Sections of this area are unmapped and are shown as such
with grey contours and a map note. While some of the unmapped areas are
runnable, please don’t run through them to enhance our prospects for
ongoing use of the Reserve. Lines between some controls are bent to
indicate where direct routes between controls must be avoided.

Courses:
Long (4.1 km, 27 controls)
Short (2.5km, 20 controls)
Mini (1.4km, 10 controls) The Mini follows a 250m section of road & carpark
in Richley Reserve. Parents, consider shadowing young competitors on this
part of the course.

Start times: Between 5pm and 6:30pm
Please choose a start time so that you complete your chosen course well
before 7:10pm

Course Closure: 7:10pm.

Finish after 7:10pm and you risk being disqualified for failing to finish the
course in the allowed time. This closure time is to enable us to collect
controls before it gets dark.

Facilities: A toilet block nearby the finish will be open. There are also
toilets and water in Richley Reserve a 2 minute drive, and then a 2 minute
walk from the main Reserve parking area. To avoid parking fees, we’re not
using this parking area.

Course Setter's Notes:
• Please respect others’ use of the Reserve.
• Keep off garden beds and out of unmapped areas.
• Both Long and Short courses have a marked watercourse crossing
shown on the map with the purple crossing symbol. This is marked in
the field with pink surveyor’s tape.
• Sections of indistinct track on Long and Short courses are difficult to
see and have been taped.
• The Long Course only has a map change (turn the map over for the
other half of the course).
Special map symbols: black cross = wreckage, black circle = seat or table,
green cross = large tree stump or root mound.

Punching: This is a Sport Ident (SI) event. There is an SI unit attached to
each control, so you will need to bring your SI stick or P-card.
The long has 27 controls, so a SI stick is needed for this course.
The short and mini courses have no more than 20 controls so both SI sticks
and P-cards are suitable. Cards and sticks are available for hire at the
event.

Mosquitoes: Bring insect repellent to protect from mosquitoes.
