Welcome to Newcastle Orienteering Club

Orienteering is a competitive or non-competitive recreational activity in which participants use a detailed map, and usually a compass, to navigate between checkpoints on an unfamiliar course in bush terrain, parkland or urban areas.

If you like a physical and mental challenge while exploring the outdoors, orienteering is the sport for you!

Wet event at the Range?

Event: Training/minor
Location: Killingworth (The Range)
Organisation: The Orrs
Entries: 69
Weather: Overcast but not raining.

Well it was wet but it wasn't raining. Most of the moisture, and there was lots of it, was restricted to the ground in either puddles, waterholes or sticky mud.

A lot of people obviously decided it was going to be raining but those that turned out had a pretty good day of it, apart from the wet/lower parts of their body.

Thanks to the Orrs and all their helpers for a fun day.
Good job!

BTW - Russell Rigby has put up route gadget maps so you can show us all how you went. Will need to add time yourself.

Set up: Daniel Orr, Kathy Grace and Mick Kavur
Rego: Daniel Orr, Kathy Grace, Maria Orr, Alex Orr
Finish: Allan Wright, Peter Orr, Tamara Orr
Control collection: Maria Orr, Alex Orr, Shane Jenkins, Geoff Peel, Dennis Lyons
Pack up: Peter Orr, Mick Kavur, Margaret Peel

NOY 8 - “Rural Acres” Singleton Results

Event: NOY8

Location: Rural Acres, Singleton
Planner: Russell Blatchford
Entries: 84
Weather: Perfect

Another great event on one of the further flung maps of the club. The over 84 entries was showed the extra travelling didn't seem to be a deterrent to a lot of folk.
Apologies for the lateness in posting the results...

34th Hunter Valley Champs

Event: 34th Hunter Valley Championships
Location: Wallaroo, Raymond Terrace
Planner: Denis Lyons
Entries: 72
Weather: Perfect to warm
Rego: Denis Lyons
Finish: Bob Montgomery, Bob Gilbert
Control Collect: Shane Jenkins, Denis Lyons, David Kitchener, Margaret Peel, Peter Newton, others???

A newer extenision to an existing map was used today for the Hunter Valley Champs. The area had a very recent reduction burn, and for the most part offered relatively unhindered movement, with some other areas offering low visibility.

A few Sydneysiders took the opportunity for some extra training for the upcoming major events to be run in Vic, ACT and the Masters in Sydney/Lithgow.

Alex Massey adds his name to an impressive lists of male "Champions" something he can look back at with pride. Tracy Marsh from Bigfoot took out the Women's championship with Karen Blatchford the "resident" champion. Note: a lot of the men in the medium red were upset Tracy had so easily beaten them until they were told her maiden name.

Despite it being the start of day light savings and a cloudy day, the club faithfuls who are not on the road competing, turned up to enjoy courses set by Colin Bailey. The rain held off for the 32 people who attempted the courses, with some ignoring the 45 minute limit to go for a longer run and collect all the points on offer.

Thanks to Colin Baily for setting the courses, Graeme Fowler for helping with the start/finish, and David Messenger, Denis Lyons, Nicole and Andrew Haigh, Mick Kuvar, Joy Guy and Tim Tew for collecting the controls.

Bush Season finale

Event: Minor (Training)
Location: Wakefield
Map: The Farm 1:7500
Planner/Organiser: Bob/Pam Montgomery
Weather: Overcast, cool
Entrants: 41

The Farm was the location of our last bush event for this season and it hosted a smaller but no less enthusiastic number of participants. Bob and Pam Montgomery provided six interesting courses on the smaller (1:7500) mapped area. Steven Todkill was a comfortable winner on the long red with Peter Charlton continuing his recent good form filling in second placing. Sam Howe finished off a great debut bush season taking out the Short Red from Central Coast 'visitor' Julia Prudhoe who placed second.

This event concluded a successful bush season for the club and I’d like to thank all involved in the running of each event, be it planning, setup, rego, control collecting or any other aspect. Without your generosity we wouldn’t be the biggest NSW club with the largest and most varied event calendar.
